Now call me a bad sports fan because I don’t remember which movie that quote came from, but it was played last night before the Silver Stars eliminated the Sacramento Monarchs 86-81 in overtime, and I think it was very fitting. I remember they played it at last year’s game 3, also against Sacramento, which we won, so I had a good feeling. The refs were terrible, as usual, but unusually bad to start the game. But as it wore on, they calmed down some although there were plenty of questionable calls. Our offense was out of sync throughout majority of the game, but our D came up big when we needed it to. And we made free throws in the clutch as well. Sophia Young was an absolute beast. She, like Becky Hammon said in a post game interview, put us on her back and carried us. She was great. Edwige Lawson-Wade had a great second quarter, hitting 3 three pointers, and scoring 11 points. She also hit two free throws in clutch time to help seal the win. Ann Wauters had a great rebounding game and, although she had 15 points, she didn’t have a good night offensively, but she also hit clutch free throws. Becky was off tonight, Sacramento played great D on her, but she still came up when we needed her. It definately wasn’t the prettiest game, but it was still great to come out of a hard fought game with a big W. And mad props to Sacramento for never, ever giving up. They really stuck around and made me very, very nervous.

I know I’m ready for the Western Conference Finals, I’m sure the Stars will be too. Either Seattle or LA and both will be difficult, so we better bring our A game every night.

Some notes, R.C. Buford, Greg Popovich, Peter Holt, and Spurs draft pick George Hill were all at the game.

Edwige. Lawson. Wade.

If someone were to tell me before the game, “Hey, I think Edwige is going to be the key factor tonight,” I probably would have laughed in their face and told them they were crazy. However, if someone were to tell me that, they would have been absolutely correct. Edwige Lawson-Wade had a career high 14 points, 4-4 from downtown, and 11 of her points coming in the key 2nd quarter. And, not only was she the key factor, she was also the Silver Star’s top scorer. Yes, ahead of Becky Hammon, Sophia Young, and Ann Wauters. Little Edwige, Little Tony as my mom calls her, led the Silver Stars in scoring. And against the LA Sparks who have been touted for their defense. Ha, yall just got burned by a little 5′6 French point guard.

The game was amazing too. It was tied after the 1st quarter and then the Silver Stars outscored the Sparks by 20 in the second. Yes, 20! We outscored the supposed dominant frontcourt and run and gun transition offense of the Sparks. By 20. That was the ball game right there, thank you very much! Lisa who? Candace quien? And I’ll say, for the first time all season, the officiating in this game wasn’t half bad. Every game that I had been to prior to this one, the officiating had been absolutely terrible. So when I saw that Daryl Humphries was officiating this game, I thought we were in for a LONG game. Luckily, we were not and we came out with a convince 76-58 win. Bye bye Sparks four game win streak! It was nice to see them walk off of our court with their heads down. Yeah, yall were beat nicely.

I’m trying to think of my favorite moment of the game, but I can’t pick just one. Becky getting a standing ovation when she recieved her flowers for winning a bronze in the Olympics was awesome. The new starting intro video and the whole starting lineup production is always nice. Edwige was great. Candace Parker’s reaction when her teammates don’t pass her the ball is priceless. And then of course, the win! All my favorite moments. I had the best time at the game. I really missed the girls and they came out and put on a great show.

Games to watch for

There are seven games left in the regular season for the Silver Stars, all of which are important games since we currently have only a half game lead over the Seattle Storm for top seed in the West, and best record in the league.

-August 28 @ Phoenix Mercury
Why It’s Important: The Silver Stars have a league best 18-9 record, however, they’re only 6-7 away from the AT&T Center. Beating the defending champion Phoenix twice on their home court, even though they’re last in the West, will not only help the Stars bring the road record to .500, but it’ll give the team some momentum going into their next game. Not to mention, it’s always nice to beat Phoenix.

-August 30 @ LA Sparks
Why It’s Important: Last time these two teams met up, the Silver Stars suffered an embarrassing 13 point loss on Lisa Leslie Court in LA. LA is struggling right now, but can still be a dangerous team, so a win would be great to improve the road record and give us another boost of momentum. (On local KMYS at 9:30)

-September 5 vs LA Sparks
Why It’s Important: Winning home games are a must and the Silver Stars have done a good job of that so far, with the second best home record in the league at 12-2, only behind Seattle’s 13-1. And, again, it’s against LA, a possibly playoff matchup.

-September 7 @ Connecticut Sun
Why It’s Important: Because it’s another road game and the Silver Stars need as many road victories as they can. Also, the Sun currently sit atop the Eastern Conference and it would be nice for the Stars to continue their dominance over the East. They are 11-0 against teams from the East this season. (On ABC at 12:30)

-September 9 @ New York Liberty
Why It’s Important: Not only would winning mean another road W (the final road game of the season), but it would come at the expense of Becky Hammon, Vickie Johnson, and Ann Wauters’ former team. It might also quiet the voices of Liberty fans who think their team, at 15-10, is the greatest thing in basketball.

-September 11 vs Connecticut Sun
Why It’s Important: A possible second victory over the Eastern Conference leading Sun would be a great morale booster heading into the playoffs. It is also a home game and the Silver Stars need to keep winning those.

-September 13 vs Sacramento Monarchs
Why It’s Important: It’s the final regular season game and it’s critical to head into the playoffs with momentum on your side. The Monarchs are also a possible playoff matchup, so the Stars need to get every bit of momentum on their side.

Silver Stars Central Episode 1 (podcast)

Note: This was originally recorded in March but was never posted to Silver Stars Central. We should have more podcasts coming very soon with the playoffs rapidly aproaching.

This is the first of hopefully many podcasts that will be coming to Silver Stars Central this season. In this episode, I talk to long-time Silver Stars season ticket-holder Stephanie Garcia about the latest during the WNBA offseason including Becky Hammon possibly playing for the Russian National Team, the Hammonites from Silver Stars Nation giving a donation to the Battered Women’s and Children’s Shelter in Becky’s name for her birthday, the latest offseason changes and we end by talking about why we are WNBA fans.

Besides being updated regularly with blog posts once the WNBA season kicks off, you should also expect to see podcasts regularly (my goal is bi-weekly) and coverage from Silver Stars games from time-to-time. Silver Stars Lose Anderson in Expansion Draft

Silver Stars center Chantelle Anderson was drafted by the Atlanta Dream in today’s expansion draft. Anderson was left unprotected since The Silver Stars were only allowed to protect 6 players on the roster.

The 6-6 Anderson is a five-year veteran and was looking to enter her third season as a member of the Silver Stars. She played sparingly last season averaging 2.5 points and just under two rebounds in eight minutes pre game.

“We really felt like we couldn’t have enough size (and we’re still not done!). She’s 6-6, she has great post moves, she played for Jim Foster at Vanderbilt and improved a lot thanks to the tough SEC competition,” said Dream coach Marynell Meaders. “She’s had a couple of injuries over the last two or three years, but I think she’s finally getting well and is playing better every day. She’s gonna add size and veteranism to this team.”

Anderson was a fan favorite in San Antonio and was also very active in the community, serving as spokesman for Choose Respect.

“Chantelle has been a real success story here in San Antonio and we want to wish for the best in her future,” said Silver Stars coach Dan Hughes. “Her ability to deal with adversity in the form of two major injuries and return to form has been inspirational.”

So I’ve become a WNBA fan

Yup, I’ll admit it. I haven’t given the WNBA much of a chance until now. Any time there was a WNBA game on NBA TV, I always found something else to watch.

My hometown Silver Stars also have been a lottery team since they came to San Antonio from Utah.

I heard at the beginning of the WNBA season that the Silver Stars traded for Becky Hammon and made some other changes and figured they’d be much improved, but still never paid any attention to their games until about 3 weeks ago.

I ended up looking for something to watch on NBA TV and saw the Silver Stars were playing so I decided to watch and try to get some basketball in my system. I ended up watching for the next 20 minutes. Then the next time I saw them on I watched the entire game. Then I stared setting my DVR for the Silver Stars games.

I came to the realization that:

• If you are a fan of the sport of Basketball, it shouldn’t matter whether it is men or women playing.

• The Silver Stars are fun to watch. No dunks or high-flying SportsCenter-making plays are needed to enjoy watching a WNBA game. They’re out there playing their asses off as much as any men and make a hell of a lot less than their NBA counterparts.

• Dan Hughes, the Silver Stars coach and GM runs his team similar to the way Pop runs his.

• It’s about damn time the WNBA get some respect, starting with me.

The Silver Stars are in their first franchise playoffs and are fresh off a routing of the Sacramento Monarchs in game 2 after they got pounded in game 1. Tonight, they have a chance to close the series out at home in the AT&T Center and advance to the Western Conference Finals against the Phoenix Mercury.

I’ll be there rooting them on and I convinced three of my brothers to go with me and if you’re reading this and live in the San Antonio area (I live in San Marcos) you should be there to get your dose of basketball while the Spurs aren’t playing. Plus there is this coupon, where you can get your ticket, a hot dog, chips and a drink for $15 bucks.
